The basic reach truck uses an out rigging apparatus mounted to the front of the truck. A set of telescoping forks that travel up and down are mounted to the out rigging. A hydraulic system which allows the operator to grab and reposition the cargo over the outriggers is also included in the forks. This design gives a more level balance of the weight and facilitates better maneuvering among the stockroom shelves and narrow aisles.

After arriving at the particular shelves intended for the pallet, the hydraulics allow the forks to swing and slide the pallet into position. A reach truck will sometimes fit into an aisle less than 10 feet across without any issue so long as there are no obstructions protruding from the shelving.

Many different models of the reach truck are offered. The most simple unit is the stand-up reach model which will slide forks beneath the pallet and transfer it to a stockroom location then slide it into place. This type of reach truck is ideal for shelving units that are no deeper than one pallet of goods. A double-reach truck works in the same basic manner as the stand-up type however uses telescopic forks that are lengthy enough to slide a pallet into shelves that accommodate two pallets. Straddle reaches are an alternative reach truck variation. This style of reach truck slides underneath the pallet and is also able to grab the sides as well. The straddle reach unit is advantageous when grasping the sides of the pallet and goods will not result in damage. They permit easy pallet retrieval of a pallet that may be 4th or 5th in line and are useful when the shelving units are within reach in more than one direction.

Warehouses, production facilities and textile firms regularly use a number of styles of the reach truck. Using a reach truck to stock supplies, pallets of finished goods, and in general to keep the storage area in order is a regular practice. Easy to operate, the reach truck can help make better use of both time and existing stockroom space.
